What to know before you use the data

  • Two emission measures. National, sector and provincial greenhouse gases come from Canada’s official National Inventory Report (all seven gases, excluding land use). The decoupling module and stats lab use Our World in Data’s fossil CO₂ so they can be paired with long-run GDP and energy for every country. Don’t mix them in one calculation.
  • Revisions. The inventory recalculates the full series every April. Always cite the edition (here: NIR 2026, covering 1990–2024).
  • Years. Provincial per-person and per-GDP values use July 1, 2024 population and 2024 nominal GDP. Provincial electricity profiles are from the Canada Energy Regulator’s 2021 data (Quebec 2018).
  • Carbon price path. Stated values: 2026 $95, 2027–2029 $100, 2030 $115, 2035 $130, 2040 $140. Years in between are interpolated for plotting.
  • Food insecurity years. Statistics Canada labels Canadian Income Survey results by reference year: the “2024” food insecurity rate (24.0%) comes from interviews in early 2025 about the previous 12 months. PROOF and some advocacy groups label the same figures 2025.
  • Hand-entered social data. Homelessness, shelter capacity, core housing need, rents and food bank figures are typed in from official reports into data-pipeline/seed/social.json. The 2019 and 2022 food bank totals are derived from published percentage changes.
  • Different years in the provinces lab. Indicators range from 2022 (core housing need) to 2025 (food bank visits).
  • Rounding. Official tables are rounded; sector sums may differ from the national total by a few tenths.

Refreshing the data

The data pipeline lives in data-pipeline/. It uses only the Python standard library.

python data-pipeline/fetch_owid.py # download Our World in Data CSVs
python data-pipeline/fetch_official.py # optional: download full CESI CSVs from canada.ca
python data-pipeline/build.py # rebuild public/data/*.json and CSVs

Hand-verified official figures are stored in data-pipeline/seed/official.json with their source links. Edit that file when a new inventory or census release comes out, then rebuild.
